What is Arbor Day?
Arbor Day is simply the celebration of the importance of our forests and has been an ongoing tradition across North America since 1872.
Arbor Day celebrations began more than one hundred years ago. J. Sterling Morton, an American State legislator addressed the horticultural society in Brownville, Nebraska, in 1872, with the message "If I had the power, I would compel every person who had a home in this state to plant and cultivate trees". He went on to sponsor a Resolution establishing April 10 as "Arbor Day" in Nebraska. It was to be a day especially devoted to tree planting.
The concept spread and now most Canadian provinces celebrate Arbor day. The NSFA is working to –revitalize Arbor Day typical held during National Forest Week in September. The NSFA celebrates this event by hosting the CHILDREN's FOREST with Forest Product Association of Nova Scotia at the Hilden office.
Nova Scotians recognize that planting new trees in their cities, towns, and villages is vital to sustaining and enhancing the environment. Trees provide us with a pleasing home environment and help control the rigors of a harsh climate.
The NSFA, in conjunction with various organizations and government departments, is encouraging our urban and rural neighbours to get involved and plan Arbor Day celebrations; to plant trees, to clean up the neighbourhood, or do whatever they wish to participate.
Arbor Day events allow us a chance to give back some of what we have used in order to provide for our children's future, and in doing so, create a gratifying satisfaction for ourselves.
Some reasons to become involved in Arbor Day Celebrations:
– Public awareness of the importance of trees is increased.
– Tree planting projects instill a greater respect and understanding for trees and the environment.
An opportunity to create a living environment that will bring peace, joy, and security for generations yet to come
Trees act as natural air conditioners, help reduce noise pollution, filter out dust and pollen, slow down strong winds, provide shade, camouflage unsightly scenes, provide us with color, flowers, and beautiful shapes.
Gets you outdoors to enjoy the day.
Fun and it encourages team work
It's a good thing to do.
